Diabetes Diagnosis

Well, I was not feeling too well and kind of had a suspicion that I was in trouble so I went to the doctor's office on July 22nd (Patty's birthday). I had been having pains in my right leg and my feet have been feeling like they were on fire. It turns out that I have been suffering with Varicose Veins but that my blood circulation looked ok. She checked the pulse rates in my legs and feet and they were somewhat fine. She also had me give a blood sample as a precaution.

I went in on Wednesday, July 27th and within 2 hours I was called into the doctor's office for an urgent consultation. My blood sugar was at 314 after the 8 hour fast in the morning and when she checked me in the afternoon (mind you, I had just eaten Mexican food with lots of chips & salsa plus had a burrito & tostada for lunch) about 30 min and that had my sugars soar to 350 so I am now a confirmed diabetic.

She put me on Metformin (500mg) twice a day plus I have had to check my glucose levels with a meter. Ouch, that stings a little but I'll get over it. It's not too bad.

The good news is that I now know what is wrong with me and can start to get healthy. The reason I've not lost weight is that the insulin in my body was not breaking down the carbs and turning things directly into fat stores. With the Metformin, I should start to drop the excess weight and get my sugar levels into a normal range.

My thought now is that this is all a good thing. I will keep you posted.
